From Little Sins, Big Sins Grow

Sydney Morning Herald

A VATICAN official, Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, has suggested seven new sins to add to the old list. Some seem more like subsections of old offences (dealing drugs, abortion, pedophilia) and others (pollution, genetic engineering) just too hard for most of us. As for social injustice - define that. And extreme wealth? If only. The old list of pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth are quite enough for most of us. Look at the case of the New York writer A.J. Jacobs, who tried to follow the Bible to the letter for a year. He wore sandals and a white robe, herded sheep and ate locusts when he could. Mindful of being fruitful and multiplying, he and his wife had a set of twins. The hardest bit? "That'd be no coveting, no lying, no gossiping. They're little sins, but they're killers. My year made me realise just how many of these sins I committed every day." On the sinning front, let's start small.
