DESPITE the wealth of challengers for the title, Cox Plate winner El Segundo has been ranked Australia's leading racehorse in the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings.

The rankings, released yesterday, had El Segundo on 123, edging out Weekend Hussler on 122 and Apache Cat on 121.

Of the 80 horses who ranked 115 or higher, 33 were Australian-trained. Another seven Australian-bred horses trained in Hong Kong and Dubai were also listed, with Hong Kong's sprint champion Sacred Kingdom also earning a ranking of 123.

Liston Stakes winner Light Fantastic earned 115 for his four unbeaten runs last season.

Dubai World Cup winner Curlin topped the list with a ranking of 130. The rankings cover those horses who either raced in or were trained in countries whose racing season runs from August 1 to July 31, so they don't include Europe's best. -- ANDREW EDDY
