DOZENS of couples throughout Australia tied the knot yesterday, hoping that the eighth day of the eighth month of 2008 would bring them wealth, health and everlasting love.
In Chinese the word for eight sounds similar to the word for "prosper" or "wealth". The eighth day of the eighth month of 2008, chosen for the launch of the Beijing Olympic Games, signifies a particularly lucky day. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages married a record 96 couples yesterday and extended its hours so some couples could marry as early as 8am and as late as 8pm. There were 11 ceremonies in the Hunter, the registry said.A series of signs led lucky-in-love Waratah newlyweds Rebecca and Robert Taylor to believe they were destined to be together. They picked yesterday for their wedding day for its lucky numbers."We chose the date as soon as we got engaged. We just wanted some good luck and happiness," Mrs Taylor said."The couple met three years ago on the same date Mr Taylor's parents married years before.Mrs Taylor shares her birthday with her new husband's son and Robert would have been named Rebecca if he had been born a girl.
